Shell Collection

Several years ago I bought this interesting shell collection at a yard sale.

I was just charmed by it. It is all handmade (except for the shells of course).

I'm guessing that this belonged to a teacher. Whoever made it painstakingly designed a chart to correspond with each of the shells, labeling them by name. I love the hand writing.

By now, after years of handling and moving around, the shells have gotten jumbled and are not in the correct spots anymore.

This is another one of those things that I bring out on display for the summer. My girls love touching the seahorse. Each year that this box is brought out it is all new to them.

I am always thrilled when I find something this unique at a yard sale. Maybe I'm one of the only people out there who actually appreciate stuff like this. I'm thinking that most people would look at this and consider it trash. I on the other hand love it's charm. To me it is American folk art.

  1. Hi Katie, I've just visited your blog after a few days and LOVE the new photo trimming your page!!! It makes me want to get out my shell boxes too. I also have the same little cottage tin. We do have the same fondness for such things. You inspire me to redo my decor and enjoy the simple pleasure of each and every little collectible! Bluebird wishes to you, Cindy

  2. How cool is this?! Nope you are not the only one who thinks this is cool ;) I wonder why someone would want to give something this cool away?
