Date Night at Goodwill

A few Monday evenings ago my MIL offered to babysit so that Mark and I could go out to dinner together - alone. Of course I wasn't going to turn that offer down. In true fashion for us, hubby suggested instead of heading home after dinner we go to the Goodwill. Of course I wasn't going to turn that offer down either! So off we went. We hit 2 Goodwill stores, had a ton of laughs and brought home some great stuff. When I heard "You are shut off" from Mark, I knew the fun was done.

At our first stop he (yes, I said HE) spotted a PINK PYREX CASSEROLE for sale. Guess what? I didn't buy it. Nope! I actually left it there for someone else to find. You see...I already own two. And since GW is sorta pricey these days - $5.99 - I didn't want it for resale either. Now $5.99 may not seem like a lot, but at Goodwill it is. I'm not the only one who thinks Goodwill is overpriced either. While we were shopping we overheard some ladies complaining about the prices. Of course that didn't stop me from buying things - but I was more selective if you will. Here are some highlights.

 Pyrex "Butterfly Gold" cups. They were only 25 cents each!

Some milk glass footed serving dishes, some planters and a metal rack. The log planter is a favorite. I will show more pictures of that when I show my Easter display.

I'm using this bowl to hold jelly beans. It was made by Westmoreland Glass.

I'm using this one to hold our Resurrection Eggs. It is Fenton. If you don't know what Resurrection Eggs are let me show you. They are great for teaching kids about the real meaning of Easter. You can buy these at Family Christian Book Store.

I'm using the little green rack on my counter to hold some old dishes. Figured I might use these if they were out to see - time will tell if my theory holds true.

I love this milk glass dish shaped like a strawberry. There was only one. Hannah uses it now to eat her breakfast in style! 

A set of vintage pillow cases in pink gingham.

I love this little dish that we found. I think it was only 25 cents. Perfect to hold pins or your rings when you are washing the dishes.

I also bought a bag of vintage chalk. The pack on the left "huga-color" was in the bag. The box on the right I have had for a while - it came from an antique store several years ago.

Hubs spotted a bag of vintage Christmas ribbon. Inside the bag was 6 spools. I'm a sucker for vintage advertising and packaging so I was very pleased when I got home and saw the Santa. All made in the USA.
There was more but at the risk of looking like a hoarder I will spare you pictures of the rest. All in all it was a ton of fun. Monday is my new favorite day to hit the thrift stores. Not many people in the store so you can shop in peace and the selection was pretty good.

Junk Drunk part 2

The junk roll continues....

I found some vintage Christmas to add to my collection including this cute little paper house. I love the heart print on the roof and the ivy trailing up the front of the house.

I almost walked away from these mugs but decided that at $2 for all I just needed to buy them and then decide what to do with them later.

This Christmas tablecloth is stained but at $1 I couldn't walk away. It may get cut up and sewn into stockings or ornaments.

Speaking of holidays, I bought these cute paper mache Easter eggs for 50 cents. The lady selling them told that me she made them. I like the pink egg the most.

From the same sale I bought these vintage curtains. The woman was cleaning out her entire house and I bought many things from her that day. These were laying discarded on the ground on the top of a garbage bag. I asked her if they were for sale and she seemed surprised that I would want them. She told me they hung in her kitchen for years.

I bought this one for the fabric and I'm going to make 2 pillows from it. It is so soft. I'm guessing it may be from the 1960's because recently when I was watching an old episode of Mad Men I noticed that Don & Betty's couch was made out of a fabric with a very similar geometric pattern.

This is a valence. I wish I would have asked her if she had 2 of these but I didn't think of it at the time. I will be using this on a window somewhere. Lucky for me I have a lot of green in my house so it will fit right in.

Good Friday

Good Friday Greetings!

Here is what we did today to recognize the importance of this day for those of us who love Jesus.

We made a lamb cake.

"The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"  John 1:29

I bought this 2 piece lamb-shaped mold many years ago before I had children - probably at a yard sale!

One of my favorite things to do is make a lamb cake each Easter with my daughters.

Iced with white frosting and covered with coconut. Yum!

This year we also made Resurrection Rolls. I saw the idea on Pinterest. This is a great visual way to teach kids about Jesus's body rising from the dead.

Ingredients:

1 tube of Crescent Rolls

Large marshmallows

Melted butter

Cinnamon Sugar

Take a marshmallow and roll it in the melted butter and then the cinnamon sugar to represent Jesus' body being treated with scented oils and spices.

"The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes." Luke 24:55

Roll the marshmallow up in a crescent roll. The crescent roll symbolizes the linen cloth that Jesus' body was wrapped in.

"Now there was a man names Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man,...he asked for Jesus' body. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock"  Luke 24:50-53

Bake the rolls according to the time and temperature on the package. When they come out of the oven the marshmallow is gone! - Just like Jesus' body. 

The tomb is empty - so is the roll.

"On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus." Luke 24: 1-2

They are delicious hot from the oven.
