This weekend was the first estate sale that I have been to since winter began. It did not disappoint! I was lucky enough to find these pink beauties - pieces that I did not already have. Just in time for Easter and Spring.

I also bought a stack of vintage linen dish towels. I love vintage towels - so soft and the graphics are the best.

Also bought this Snowflake Garland lidded dish. I am going to use it to hold salt on my counter.

All in all I think I did great for my first estate sale of the season!

I also hit a few thrift shops this weekend. I bought these. Not sure if I will keep them or not. The longer they sit here the more tempted I am to keep them.  I already have so many drinking glasses that it is hard to justify 8 more - but these look so good with my Pyrex. :)

Weekend Finds

It was a good weekend for vintage treasures - which is surprising given the time of year.

I have been longing for a good estate sale for weeks now. I search the ads on Craigslist every week looking for something, anything, that looks like it may have some good vintage junk. This past week my husband saw an ad for a sale close to us that looked like a good one. Only problem - it started on a Thursday. Since I work during the week I wasn't going to be able to make it the first day or the second day. Saturday was to be half-off day. I didn't figure much would be left over by then but since there wasn't any other sales around what was I to lose if I went? So off we went. Well I was pleasantly surprised to find some good stuff left. Although it was picked through there were lots of boxes in the basement that still had things inside. After digging I was lucky enough to find a few treasures. Here is what I bought from that sale - my total $ amount - $12 for all. It does pay to go to the half-off day.

My best find at this sale - the Pyrex Heinz promotional #503. It was buried in a box in the basement. This was a promotion item sold in grocery stores in 1953 for 79 cents when you purchased 3 cans of Heinz baked beans.

 My friends on Instagram tell me that there was originally a lid that went with this piece. I didn't find the lid at the sale - but otherwise this in in very nice condition. This is a pretty green color that is different than the Pyrex turquoise or primary green. Apparently it is the same shade of green as the label on the Heinz baked beans at that time. After finding this on Saturday my husband found a Good Housekeeping magazine from that year for sale on eBay with the original advertisement inside. He bought it for me. I haven't gotten it yet but when I do I will post a pic. I think I may frame it for in my kitchen.

Also inside a box in the basement were these cookbooks. Not sure if I am going to keep these or not. They are in very nice condition. There is a little musty smell to them but otherwise look like they weren't even used.

This cute basket was also in the basement. The bottom of the basket is in pretty bad shape and broken. I removed the liner and washed it in the washing machine to get it clean and fresh. I think I will just use this to hold yarn so I'm not worried about the bottom being broken as it is just going to sit on the floor.
The table cloth is vinyl. I love the print and vinyl is so useful on a table when you have kids at home. The only problem is this particular tablecloth has a weird smell to it. I washed it 2 times in the machine and also put it through the dryer. It isn't a moldy smell but a plasticy smell that makes me gag. I don't know if this will stay or go.

I also found a Bingo game, a Federal Glass bowl, a smock-style apron, and this cute crochet drawstring purse in red and white.

We hit two other estate sales besides the one mentioned above. Mostly newer stuff at these sales but I did find this cute apron for $1.

I also found this bun warmer. A really useless item but oh so cute for display. I saw one of these for sale in an antique shop this past summer and was tempted to buy it but didn't at that time. Glad that I held off because this one was only $1 at the estate sale. It matches my aluminum cake carriers from the same era.

On Friday evening after work I went to my favorite thrift shop. I didn't find much in the way of vintage but I did find this wonderful ripple/chevron blanket. It has the most beautiful shades of blue and brown - a color combination that I love. It is a lap-size. I am having a love affair with crochet these days. I wish that I could actually make something like this but for now I will just thrift it!

All in all a great weekend for finds. It satisfied my cravings for vintage junk for sure!

Ring Holder

 

Not sure what the original purpose of this little milk glass cup was. Salt holder? I found it at the estate sale where I got all of the milk glass and the yard long picture. There was only one. I think it makes a stylish ring holder. I love that it stands on a pedestal.

I keep it next to my kitchen sink for when I take off my rings to wash my hands or do dishes. Lord knows that I need such an item because I am always misplacing my wedding bands. I don't really like to wear them when I'm doing the dishes so I often take off the rings and put them in my pants pocket - or worse, just lay them somewhere. Then I promptly forget about them until the next day when I go to put them on again. I have found my rings on the bottom of the washing machine a few times. Recently I "lost" them again. Hubby was nice enough to point out that I had a ring holder and I ought to use it! Yes Dear.

Recent Finds

Here are some of my recent vintage finds. I thought it would be fun to make a fancy little collage to show off these scores!

Lots of milk glass! We went to an amazing estate sale recently at the home of a collector. In the basement there where lots of shelves {picture warehouse style} loaded with vintage glassware! When we arrived at 1 in the afternoon {half off time} there was a line to get in the door and cars parked as far as the eyes could see. Some of the milk glass I bought is shown above. I am in love with the "milk glass taco". Not really sure what the official name of it is. I have the same exact thing in a cake plate. I think it is pretty neat. I can see putting Cannoli's {I am Italian after all} on there. I think that would be super cute. I will find a use- I will, I will!

The amazing finds shown above were brought to you by my hubs. a.k.a. "master junker"! He went away for the labor day holiday and happened to stop at a few yard sales & thrift shops. The McCoy pot only cost 10 cents! I kid you not. I mean what can you buy these days for a dime? Apparently you can score an awesome piece of pottery actually!

The cheese dish was made by Lefton, Japan and was FREE. "Master Junker" stumbled upon a yard sale with a sign that said "FREE Market" - instead of Flea Market. Everything was free.

The Pyrex mugs came from the Sal Army store. All four for 99 cents! Gotta love these deals!

Would you buy this?

Have you ever seen something for sale that your heart said "buy" but your head said "no don't"? That was the case with this very worn and shabby print that I found at an estate sale recently.

I did end up buying it...even though it is water damaged. That didn't dissuade me from buying it in the least. I love it and couldn't leave it behind.

I did get it for half price. We got to the sale late in the day and everything was selling for half of what it is marked. {So that made the purchase easier.}

Here is a close up of the print. It features lavender hydrangeas. I think it is the muted colors that I love the most about it. It is very soft, feminine, vintage and romantic. I plan on hanging it over my bed.

When it is hung I promise to show pictures of how FAB it is!

Saturday Scores

Here are some finds from this past Saturday. These items were all found at one estate sale. Yard sales haven't really kicked in yet here in PA but I sure love me a good estate sale. This sale was a "ladies sale" if I ever saw one. The house belonged to an older woman and was filled up with her clothing, sewing notions, linens and knick knacks. Not a tool or a gun in site. Here is what I couldn't live without.

These are vintage hair combs. It is hard to tell from the picture but they are quite large. They were 25 cents each! What a good deal. I'm not sure what I will do with these. Probably tear them apart and re-purpose the flowers into new hair bows. The one below is my favorite. It will stay as is. I can actually see someone wearing this one. The others are all huge and make quite a statement.

About a year ago I posted about buying some vintage flower pins with the idea to make a brooch bouquet with them. I haven't started that project yet because I am still looking for more flowers. I found this pin with matching earrings. $2 for the set.

A cute candy/cookie tin made in Germany. This will be for sale on etsy.

I love these. They sort of fall into that category of "I want to keep these but should probably sell them". They are bark cloth pillow cases. They are in nice shape - no holes or tears. These will probably stay with me...at least for the time being.

My favorite type of find at any sale - vintage chenille blankets. I have been lusting for a red and white chenille blanket for years but have never seen one (other than on ebay) to buy. Hubby spied this one in the basement folded up and discarded in the corner. It is in bad shape. It has holes and is very worn. They only charged me $1 for it. Alas it will not be my dream bedspread but instead will be made into some Christmas trees come fall. The blue one - the twin of the red one - is in perfect shape. It was for sale in one of the bedrooms - wrapped in plastic for preservation :) - Not sure what I will do with this one - probably make something with it too. I'm not in love with the design so I think this one will be made into a shower curtain for my blue bathroom or into pillows.

This was my favorite find of the day. This sale had a lot of vintage ladies clothing. This awesome dress was hanging in the basement along with several other vintage dresses. Obviously the family running the sale didn't think much of these. I love this dress. It is white satin with small red flowers on it. My favorite color combo. It is in perfect shape - no stains! I paid $2 for it. I am planning on hanging it in my bedroom on the back of the door or something - just to look at it and think about how fun it would have been to wear something like this to a party or a wedding back in the day. I definitely was born in the wrong era.

Another vintage dress from the same basement rack. At $2 each it was so hard to walk away from these. This one has orange strawberries on it. I don't think they are faded red either because the lining of this dress is as orange as a pumpkin. This baby will be for sale at an upcoming show I am doing. Hopefully there are other lovers of vintage clothing out there that will appreciate this. PS - did you spy my kitty in the photo sitting on the toilet? He just has to be involved in some way.

The last of the dresses bought from the basement. This one is longer than what the photo shows. It is navy, red & white. I believe it is rayon. I could actually see someone wearing this currently. It is very neat. This one will be for sale.

I also bought some other small items that will be going for sale in my etsy shop. Speaking of the shop, I listed the music box/jewelry box (shown in the last post) on etsy and it sold within 1 hour of posting it. It has since been mailed to Detroit. I knew that it was cool!

Saturday Scores

Hubby and I went to a few sales this past Saturday. That is our usual routine. We get up early and hit any local garage or estate sales and are usually home by 10 am. Plus, now that my kids are older we can leave them home alone for a few hours and go without them - which is great. This is my favorite time each week - looking for junk with my favorite partner in crime. Here are some highlights of what I bought. Most everything that I bought this time will be for resale. I am committed to only keeping the things that I absolutely cannot live without.

This was my favorite find of the day. I found these at an estate sale. They were in a jar inside the kitchen cabinets - mixed in with some other random corn holders & screws. These will be for sale - although I think they are awesome and are sort of tempted to keep them.

Vintage musical jewelry box with ballerina. I love this one. My favorite thing about it is the ballerina turning in front of the triangle mirror surrounded by her "stage". This is very "shabby chic" and feminine - a style that I love. However, even though I love it, I am putting it for sale on etsy. I know it will find a home where it will be loved and appreciated by a kindred spirit.

I have been buying a lot of vintage Tupperware lately for resale. Here are my latest purchases soaking in my sink for a good cleaning. Turns out that older Tupperware is collectible. I recently bought a vintage canister set at and estate sale for $1 and turned around and sold it on eBay for quite a bit more. I am hoping that lightening will strike twice and that I will be able to sell these other pieces as well.

I also bought this Kodak Hawkeye Instamatic camera. I like these older cameras for display. I usually just sit them on my bookshelves. This one will also be for sale on etsy.

I'm going to make "Saturday Scores" a regular feature here on the blog. I hope the weather is turning warm were you are and that you are able to get out and treasure hunt too.

Pinking Shears

Aren't these charming? I love the original packaging in soft pink, blue and black. I am drawn to vintage advertising - even if it is on the outside of a box containing a humble pair of scissors.

When I find these types of things from the past I like to display them around the home. Wouldn't these be cute sitting on a shelf in a sewing room or craft room? They are even useful!

These were found at an estate sale inside a box of miscellaneous, discarded sewing items. We bought the entire box just for these scissors.

What I Found This Weekend

Here is what I found this weekend at yard sales. I didn't figure I would find much and I was pleasantly surprised. Here is the recap...

Some linens: A pillowcase ($1) 2 linen dishtowels ($1 each), cherry fabric remnant ($1), Christmas dish towel ($1)

This cool desk - found at an estate sale. It hangs on the wall. The 90 year old man who owned the house made it himself. It was $10.

The door opens to reveal the desk. I am going to paint it white and hang it in my younger daughter's room.

A retro clock in my favorite shape of butter yellow. I paid a bit more for this clock than I usually do for something at an estate sale ($8). There was just something about it that I really liked so I splurged! Now that it is home I'm not even sure I have a place for it. Oh well.

Some jewelry, a metal table & a milk glass dish (jewelry 50 cents each, metal table $8)

The fabric on the back of the rocker shown here is actually 2 curtains. I love the material - with pretty green and blue flowers. I saw them hanging up inside the house at an estate sale. I asked the lady if they were for sale. She said yes - for $1. I took them down, brought them home and washed them. The water was dark brown during the wash - they were that dirty. I am happy to report that after 2 washes they came out fresh and super soft - ready to be made into some new curtains & pillows for my living room. The moral of this story - if it isn't nailed down it may be for sale. Just ask.
